This year – not Arashi, but KAT-TUN? Johnny’s Expectations

Last year, the highest riding stars in the entertainment world were Arashi. Even as we come into 2010, the drama starring all five members of the group, Last Promise (Fuji TV), has already been marked as a high rating drama, showing that ‘Arashi mania’ is set to keep going. However, in the typical style of Johnny’s, it seems that 2010 is set to be KAT-TUN’s year.

KAT-TUN started the new year early, with an appearance on the live broadcast of SMAP×SMAP. While most appearances on this programme are advertised, KAT-TUN appeared with none. “By letting them appear in their sempai’s long running, popular TV programme, we can push KAT-TUN’s name recognition status” is, for whatever reason, the clear expectation of the Johnny’s Entertainment camp.

Furthermore, early into 2010 the movie BANDAGE, marking member Akanishi Jin’s first starring role, opened in cinemas. Various prominent names are involved in this film, including Kobayashi Takeshi (producer of such bands as Remioromen and Mr Children) as director and musical supervisor, and with Iwai Shunji (of movies Swallowtail and All About Lily Chou-Chou) in charge of the screenplay.
The rock band of the film, LANDS, also released a single in November, BANDAGE, and an album, Olympos, on the 13th, both becoming hits. Moreover, the film is set to be distributed in Taiwan and South Korea.

As for the dramas of the moment, Kamenashi Kazuya’s new drama, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (‘The Wallflower’/’Perfect Girl Evolution’) has just started. Kamenashi has a reputation as a ‘poor ratings actor’ (?), but the drama has ridden this out, and with Uchi Hiroki and Tegoshi Yuya of NEWS co-starring, as well as Katou Seishirou (who had his big break last year with the Kodomo Tenchou ‘Child Store Manager’ Toyota commercials), there is no shortage of conversation topics when it comes to this drama.

Akanishi’s box office record and Kamenashi’s ratings are something to worry about, but it’s entirely possible that KAT-TUN, like Arashi last year, can make their big break this year. So, what tricks has Johnny got up his sleeve this time?

Hmmm… curious. I’m not exactly sure what we’ll see happen, but it definitely seems like Arashi mania is going to continue to sweep, in my opinion.
Not too long ago VS Arashi went into golden prime time, and Aiba-san just won best actor for My Girl. And like you mentioned, the drama starring all 5 of them is already doing really well.

Maybe the hype from the 10 year debut anniversary will die down a bit, but I don’t how know quickly. And with the Winter Olympics starting, having Sho-kun’s face out there every day commentating will bring him even more recognition…

But you’re right that Johnny-san certainly knows how to successfully market!!! So if it’s his plan to make KAT-TUN overshadow Arashi, he just might be able to do it… though, I think the fangirls might have something up their sleeves too ~_^

Cute blog by the way! ❤

with all the activities that Arashi is into this year..irdts! Nino have Gantz, Sho is very influencial as a newscaster, he have Olympics/drama, he’s in demand host etc..they’re still AU’s face endorser, their variety show increase to 1 (they have 3 primetime, and 1 midnight vs), they break kohaku Johnny policy too plus Matsujun, Aiba and Ohno have rumored dramas…they’re in demand and i dont think it will die down any sooner. accdg. to a friend of mine in Japan, everybody knows them there and people see them as real people and they have so much support even to none fans as well…If Johnny wants Kattun, im not against it though its a really tough one since they need to prove themselves to Japan means of all ages…and i dont think they have a good image from what i heard though.

It seems that Arashi will still make it big this year. Not only Gantz but also Ohoku (movie) seems to be choosing Nino as its lead. “Troublemaker” seems to be anticipated by a lot, too. And now, Arashi will have a new variety show: Arashi ni Shiyagare! I’ll definitely miss Shukudaikun because its one of the funniest there is.

If Johnny’s wants to improve Kat-tun’s image, it’s okay because Arashi can’t always be in the spotlight and they’re getting older. So let’s have the kouhai-s have their time, too. But I believe that their success (if they are going to make it big this year) wouldn’t be as great as Arashi’s. Arashi is very different in terms of charisma and choice of songs (which seems to be better than the other JE’s, usually).

For me, Kat-tun should shine as a group and not individually. The teamwork and bonding of Arashi should set an example. So, ganbatte to Kat-tun. They’re good singers, too. I wonder when NEWS will have their year, too… ^_-‘
